Success stories are always encouraging. Even more so, when it’s your own. I am excited about today’s post. It is inspiring. It has great substance. It is a recipe for success. How do you increase your earnings in a short period of time? (Rhetorical) Did I know that this would happen? Most certainly not. Sometimes your career and job choices take you in directions unimaginable. In fact, they can be 180 degrees from what you thought you wanted – or needed. I have learned to embrace (and honor) the forces that be. Opportunities or windows, when a door has seemingly closed. It all started just after college and scouring the Northeast for that perfect START!

As an academic scholar who did EXTREMELY well in College (Go UConn Huskies) I thought that getting a job and a good paying one would be easy. “How could they not want me?” I did a thesis and am a National Honors Scholar. I must have stuffed 150 envelopes with my slate grey resume (slick looking – how the bold font bounced off the thick, decorative paper stock). I was ambitious as they come – still am. Much to my dismay, the responses didn’t come in. Not like today with social media… I probably can get a job before my next post. Lightning fast. But, in those days, mind you circa 1999… you were at the mercy of the job boards, resume readers (a computer that only likes 10-12 Times New Roman font), and obsolete processes.

July of 1999: I finally landed a job in a financial services company that was in downtown Boston. Back Bay. Beautiful area, but not affordable for a new grad making just $26,000. YES, that was my starting salary. I commuted back and forth for about a year until jumping into a NEW window? My next role was a step up for sure both figuratively and literally. Same building, I went to the 46th floor. Different company, different job. The leap from mutual fund accounting to finance. Still, it wasn’t fulfilling. And to change roles for a mere $2,000 salary increase? I thought there would be upside potential. I didn’t stay long, but trusted my judgement. I needed a plan B. Or plan C, I suppose. Already 2 jobs out of college. Not careers, jobs. Maybe just over a year under my belt. Sound familiar? BTW, I would love to hear YOUR story. Please share through our various SM channels or via the site (Contact Us).

Sometime in 2000: I did some soul-searching. It made a huge difference. You see, to have success sometimes you need to do something different to get different results. I got my foot in the door at a large, prestigious financial services firm. That was part of the plan. I needed someplace I can grow and climb through windows. Thankfully, this building was just 3 stories. I started in Customer Service and kept my eyes on the prize. Slight uptick in salary to low $30,000’s. But, I wasn’t killing it. NOT yet. It was here that I focused on Sales. Powerful. It started with the phone center and selling clients on potential investment options. I excelled… I saw the future. The trick is to work at a company where YOU believe in the product. The product or service can practically sell itself. Sales can be a very lucrative career and a necessity to understand – especially if you become an entrepreneur. You have to understand YOUR business and the benefits. I learned a ton through this entry level sales role. It’s not as everyone makes it seem. Sure, there could be some “cold calling” or the fear of rejection, if someone does answer the phone. But TODAY the game has changed. It’s easier. Social Media has altered the sales paradigm.

2003-ish: I mentioned that I made $75,000 more in 4 years. It’s true. After doing an entry level role for about 2.5 years, I was promoted to a strictly sales position within the company (An Inside Wholesaler selling Mutual Funds) and made just north of $100,000. This was my goal, get into a great company and opportunities are abundant. I made a decent BASE salary, which was more than either of the jobs I previously held; Further, I had COMMISSION potential. A HUGE key to making more money in a short time frame. You see, I enjoyed sales. I was quite good at it. However, when I decided to move on to other opportunities – New windows – this role did MORE than just satisfy monetary needs. It raised the bar for my NEW starting salary. If a NEW employer wanted me, they wouldn’t be able to hire me for an amount that is much less than what I made as a Wholesaler (Including Commissions). There is no role or profession that can expedite your earnings like that of sales. If I stayed on the same track with the jobs I first took out of College I would have made MAYBE 2% increases year over year, which is worse than inflation. You need to be BOLD and find ways to increase wealth quicker, it is just the reality.

I am excited today, as an entrepreneur, that I can offer up an opportunity for someone – one of my readers, perhaps? – to delve into Sales with Bizzeebobber. Help us sell our services. Not the traditional model that I spoke of above. Do “Cold Calls” if you like, but I am looking for that Social Media Maven. That working Mom who is trying to rise to new heights (or maybe JUST back into the market). That Veteran who fought for our country, but just cannot seem to get an opportunity as they are “not qualified”. I can teach the basics, but I need verve. I need the drive. I need someone who is looking to be a part of something big. Is it YOU? Please CONTACT me, if you are interested in Sales (and more information). Great commission structure. Perfect opportunity for the right profile. I have 2 positions available: Social Media Client Managers. Grow with us.
