ADULTS: Do you have Resume Bravado?
- Volunteer – Venture outside your comfort zone. If you are Business Savvy, maybe endeavor to Volunteer someplace without ties to Accounting, or Financial Pursuits. Example: Serve at a Soup Kitchen, Manage a Baseball team, and more… This will help diversify your profile.
- IT Knowledge, “Organize your Garden” – You probably have some details to add to your resume, right? Don’t make it hard for companies to hire you, because they cannot decipher what you really know. So, 1) Make sure you are ALWAYS cultivating your IT (Information Technology) knowledge and attend courses, seminars and incorporate any skills you may use at a personal level (Common ones missed: Quick Books, Adobe Suite, Social Media tools like Instagram, Face Book or Tumblr, as examples) onto your resume. 2) Organize, Organize, Organize. Meaning, make sure you group items together on your resume or CV (Social Media is a grouping, Microsoft Products or Suite = a grouping, CRM (For client management) you have used… Another logical grouping). But you have to have items to group, so make sure you are always learning new technologies. For personal growth as well as professional growth.
- Translate it for me – We are not talking about a Resume or CV written in Telugu, Farsi or French, but Translate it implies that YOU understand your experience. If you don’t, no one else will. Best way to do this? Identify what you want your Resume or CV to do – are you looking for a specific role? Are you open to maybe 2 or 3 different types of roles and you are trying to be somewhat generic? It should never be just a boring list of accomplishments or bullet points depicting everything you have done since the tender age of 18. What is your angle? Do you want me to know that you are a Project Manager (PM) who can work in any industry OR you are maybe “currently” a PM, but looking to leverage your background to become a CFO for a small company? Remember, you have to get the interview first. Your resume needs to reflect your goals. Eliminate former roles that are dated or make no sense in obtaining your new job. Great that you were a cook for 7 years, but will that help you get the Accounting job? Or, is there a way to spin this experience – “Translate it” – where maybe you can show that you used the skills conducive to being a hot shot Accountant? You audited the refrigerator perhaps, after making a note of all current assets. Joking, but cooks that own their own restaurants or have a senior role may be exposed to Financials and Operational aspects of the business. Share that information. Another way to do this (reflect your goals), albeit not always the best idea, you can create an OBJECTIVE at the top of your resume. Also, piggyback your bragging rights with a crafty cover letter that supports your end goal. It isn’t always easy, but you should review your Resume / CV atleast twice a year (may not need to physically recalibrate as often, but reviewing it is worthwhile).
Note: Bizzeebobber suggests utilizing the review period to jot down updates to bullet points and make a list of accomplishments over the past 6 months – they can be easily forgotten, if you wait until the 1 year or 2 year mark to do it all at once. Did you save a company some money – How much? Details are important. Did you learn a new Technology (my Plug for item # 2 above – they get missed regularly)? Find a Career Services company that will identify gaps or help you with your strategy to convey the right message. Do a Review initially, which is cheaper, versus paying Full-Price to a company that may not be able to deliver the goods. Bizzeebobber offers Resume Reviews AND will help fix you resume or CV. Contact Us for more information. Ohh, and almost forgot, a 4th item…

“GREEN-THUMBISM’s” from Your Friends at Bizzeebobber: You can always plant “flowers”. April Showers bring May Flowers. We are not Gardening aficionados, but Lilies might be a nice choice. Or Tulips? How ’bout an Iris (Lots of female names what happened to equal rights – Kidding of course). Heck, you can even plant a Tree. Unique, Pure… and each with its own personality (Thanks Carl Sagan). MANY TREES, make for a beautiful, mosaic of “Role Model” profiles and Awe-inspiring forest. Hope WE have planted the seed.
